2020 JEEP WRANGLER DIESEL & HYBRID ENGINES: AND WHAT WE KNOW

2020 JEEP WRANGLER DIESEL & HYBRID ENGINES: AND WHAT WE KNOW

Heavily rumoured, albeit not officially confirmed yet, the New Jeep Wrangler JL may release with a Hybrid V-6 Engine and an EcoDiesel V-6 Engine by the end of 2019. The Hybrid engine will likely use the same technology found in the 2.0L I-4 Direct Injection, available in most 2019 models currently, only in a V-6 variant. The Diesel on the other hand, functions almost identically to the new engine option available in the 2020 Ram 1500, a V-6 EcoDiesel with Turbo. Both of the new engine options are anticipated to have multiple transmission options, with the hybrid being standard with a 6-Speed manual transmission and an available 8-Speed Automatic, whereas the diesel is reversed.
Hybrid:
To explain the new Hybrid System in the 2020 Jeep Wrangler is to explain eTorque, the mild-hybrid system that is already in the Direct Injection 2.0L 4-Cylinder engine available for the 2019 models. In short, eTorque has two components, a belt-driven motor generator that will replace what traditionally would be an alternator, and the second is a lithium-ion battery pack.
When the gas engine is running, a 48-volt current is delivered to the battery, which converts the energy into a 12-volt current that powers the vehicles conventional battery, keeping it topped off, as well as powering the electrical accessories of the vehicle. When the vehicle is decelerating or braking, the eTorque system will capture the energy, and store it in the lithium-ion battery pack for future use.
So essentially, what does all of this mean? First, this means that your engines automatic stop/start function can operate for a longer period of time. Second, the hybrid system can add torque to the crankshaft for better performance, as well as adding torque to the crankshaft for smoother transmission shifting. Lastly, you're going to be getting better fuel economy, albeit at the cost of overall horsepower.
Both of the hybrid engine options, the 2.0L and the 3.6L, will only be available on the “Sahara” trim level for the All-New 2020 Wrangler JL.
Diesel:
Exclusive to the Wrangler Unlimited JL (four-door body style) but open to all trim levels, the new 3.0L EcoDiesel V-6 Engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and boasts over 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. This compares favorably with the gas engine options on the Wrangler, those being the 2.0L and 3.6L, which will produce 270 horsepower with 295 lb-ft and 285 horsepower with 260 lb-ft respectively.
Reportedly, the Wrangler’s new diesel engine will come standard with automatic Stop/Start technology, but other options like a locking rear differential, electronic disconnecting sway bar and transfer case will vary depending on the trim you buy.
Although pricing and fuel economy ratings have not been announced for either of the new engine options, many outlets are reporting more information is on the way soon, with an end of the year release date being very common among Jeep and their respective outlets.
